Introducing AkelCares – A New Initiative to Support Local Non-Profits

Akel Homes donated a total of $15,000 to the participating non-profits to kick-off the AkelCares initiative. In addition, at the closing of each home sold at Villamar at Toscana Isles in Lake Worth, Florida, Akel Homes will donate a total of $300 to be distributed among one, two, or three of the above non-profit organizations selected by the homebuyer.

Akel Homes, a semi-custom homebuilder based in South Florida, launched the AkelCares program, a new initiative to support local non-profits. In the inaugural year of AkelCares, Akel Homes has partnered with the following non-profit organizations: Feeding South Florida, Habitat for Humanity, and The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research. By partnering with these non-profit organizations, Akel Homes looks to support the local community on issues such as hunger relief, housing and cancer research.

In October, Akel Homes donated a total of $15,000 to the participating non-profits to kick-off the AkelCares initiative. In addition, at the closing of each home sold at Villamar at Toscana Isles in Lake Worth, Florida, Akel Homes will donate a total of $300 to be distributed among one, two, or three of the above non-profit organizations selected by the homebuyer.

“Now more than ever, families in our local community are in need. As a local homebuilder, we believe it is our responsibility to foster the construction of strong foundations and connections within our community to overcome the challenges that so many families face on a daily basis. AkelCares is a platform that sets out to do just that. Through our corporate involvement, homeowner engagement, and selection of these three tremendous organizations, it is my hope that together we can make a positive impact within our community for years to come”, said Alexander Akel, President of Akel Homes.

Feeding South Florida

Feeding South Florida is the largest food bank serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties and has provided nearly 99.3 million meals to over 1.4 million individuals. This non-profit nourishes family with healthy, whole foods, unites the community around hunger and poverty issues, and helps families achieve household stability. More than 98% of the donations are used towards providing individuals with wholesome meals, that are unable to afford groceries. For every $1 donated to Feeding South Florida, 9 meals are provided.

“We are grateful for Akel Homes’ support during this time of increased need. This holiday season will be particularly hard for families. Donations help put food on the table for over 1 million people struggling to make ends meet,” says Feeding South Florida’s Executive Vice President, Sari Vatske.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. Volunteers as well as Habitat homeowners assist in building their own homes and pay an affordable mortgage. Even during a time where interest rates appear to be at an all-time low, too many families are finding themselves in situations where seeking shelter is not a possibility, and Habitat assists by providing these individuals with affordable housing. In 2019, Habitat helped more than 7 million people, and an additional 2.3 million gained the potential to improve their housing conditions through training and advocacy.

“It is with the emboldened commitment and partnership with a residential construction industry leader as Akel Homes that we at Habitat are able to ‘pay it forward’ for hard-working, low income families who dream of home ownership where their children and grandchildren can be safe and thrive, but can’t quality for traditional bank mortgages,” shared Habitat for Humanity South Palm Beach County President and CEO Randy Nobles. “The support of Akel Homes has played an integral role in helping us deliver on our Habitat mission of building homes, communities and hope.”

The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research

The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research is the largest grassroot fundraising organizations in South Florida. The mission of the Pap Corps is “to enable and support through the funds that are raised, the vital research programs at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center University of Miami Miller School of Medicine”.  Sylvester is the only NCI designated cancer center in Southeast Florida and one of only 71 throughout the country.  This allows Sylvester the opportunity to receive more clinical trials which helps them with their groundbreaking cancer research. Researchers place enormous efforts in eradicating all forms of cancer. For over 68 years, The Pap Corps has donated over $110 million including a $50 million dollar pledge to Sylvester.  In 2018, there were 17 million new cancer cases worldwide and The Pap Corps works hard to support Sylvester in finding a cure so we have more “next survivors”. The Pap Corps is made up of over 22,000 members (men and women) and 50 Chapters in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

“The Pap Corps is honored to be a part of Akel’s program called “AkelCares” and  truly appreciates Akel’s support for non-profit organizations such as The Pap Corps and their fundraising efforts,” said Susan Dinter, Chair of The Pap Corps Board of Directors.
